Residential Service:  Residential trash/ recycling pickups are every Thursday.  Residential large item pickup is the first Thursday of each month.  If there is a holiday that Deffenbaugh observes (see list below), trash/ recycling will be picked up one day later that week.

All waste must be bagged or bundled/tied, weigh no more than 65 pounds, and must be curbside by 7:00am.  Trash must be placed on the ground.  Deffenbaugh will not remove trash from trailers, trucks, cars, etc.  All trash must be visible from the street and not blocked by parked vehicles or other items that may restrict crew’s ability to locate and remove.

Trash containers are to be no larger than 32 gallons.  No plastic, metal or cardboard barrels.  No 55 gallon barrels will be emptied.

Branches and tree limbs should be cut into lengths of 4 feet with a diameter of 4 inches.  Bundles should be tied with a diameter not to exceed 18 inches or 65 lbs and placed at the curb.

Any carpet, carpet padding, or like material should be rolled and cut into sections not to exceed 4 feet in length.  The rolls should then be tied and not exceed 25 - 30 lbs each.

No tires, batteries, oil, gasoline or other hazardous materials will be picked up by Deffenbaugh.  For information on where to dispose of hazardous waste, contact the Utility Billing Department in City Hall at 592-3664.

As a special service to you, and for an additional charge, Deffenbaugh will make “Special Pickups” of concrete, appliances, furniture, construction debris or other unusual items that are not included in your normal service.  Please call Deffenbaugh for details at 1-800-631-3301.

For information on establishing residential service, please contact the Utility Billing Department in City Hall at 913-592-3664.

Curbside Recycling Program:  This program will help establish priorities to foster a cleaner, healthier community and environment.  By recycling, residents are helping to reduce the impact upon landfills and promote efficient use of natural resources.  Deffenbaugh distributed collection bins for recycling to each household.  All collection bins are the property of Deffenbaugh and are to be used only for the recycling program.  Recycling is collected on the same day that trash is collected on Thursday.  You may place the bins at the curb by 7:00a.m. next to your trash containers.  All containers must be removed from the curb within twelve hours following collection of the solid waste and recyclable materials.  For a detailed list of items to recycle, please click here or visit Deffenbaugh's website at http://www.deffenbaughdisposal.com/recycling.asp

For additional programs and information about recycling, you may visit the Mid-America Regional Council Solid Waste Management District website at www.marc.org/environment.

The recycling trailer is also available and is located in the parking lot at 110 E. Wilson.  (This is the old Buy Rite parking lot.)

For information on establishing commercial trash service, please contact the Utility Billing Department in City Hall at 913-592-3664.

What household hazardous materials need special disposal?

Hazardous material is marked on the product container with such words as “poison”, “caution”, “warning”, and “danger”.  These words indicate that the product contains hazardous material that can be corrosive, reactive, toxic, flammable or explosive.  If not safely stored, used, or disposed of, they can cause hazards to you and the environment.

Common materials accepted at the Hazardous collection facility:

Adhesives                                 Brake Fluid                            Car Batteries

Cleaning Products                     Disinfectants                          Herbicides

Insecticides                              Kerosene                               Motor Oil

Paint                                        Photo Chemicals                    Pool Chemicals

Solvents                                   Wood Preservatives                 Arts/Craft materials

1-3 lb. Propane Cylinders

Some household items can be legally disposed of in other ways:

  • Latex paint can go in the trash, but if it is still liquid, solidify it with kitty litter or sawdust.  The Johnson County latex paint recycling program uses good paint to create light or dark paint colors, and is available to the public for exterior use only.
  • Used motor oil can be recycled at many Jiffy Lube, Valvoline Oil Change stores and NAPA Auto Parts.  Please call the store to confirm before you go. Used motor oil contains many pollutants, and it is illegal to use it for dust or weed control.
  • Antifreeze can be safely disposed of in the sanitary sewer; do not dispose in a septic tank, or stormwater drain.  Spilled antifreeze has a sweet taste and can be lethal to animals.  Always clean up spilled antifreeze and dispose of properly.
  • Household alkaline batteries can be disposed of in the trash.
  • Propane tanks, such as used with barbeque grills, can be taken to Suburban Propane at 2837 Roe Lane, Kansas City, KS (913-236-5656).  A fee is charged.
  • Empty containers can be disposed of in the trash.
  • Solidified materials such as adhesives, caulk tubes, roof cement, glues and crack sealer can go in your household trash.

Be sure to package your hazardous waste carefully when bringing it to the disposal site.  Make sure lids and caps are on tight. If the container is leaking; place it in a bucket with kitty litter or sawdust. Package containers so they will not fall over, placing them in a box so they will be stable.  Re-label containers if the original labels are missing. Do not leave containers in hot or freezing cars.

Miami County:  The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility is located at 327th and Hospital Dr. in the Public Works Facility.  This facility is for the use of Miami County residents only. Material from businesses cannot be accepted.  The hours of operation are on Wednesday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, and the second Saturday of the month, May through October, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. More information is available at this web site: www.miamicountyks.org/health.html
