SPRING HILL, KS, OCTOBER 22, 2008: The City of Spring Hill’s garbage collection will be performed by L & K Services, Inc. effective November 1, 2008. The City’s switch in service provider will result in some changes residents will want to make note of. Collection pick up dates will now be as follows: City residents in Miami County will continue to have a weekly pickup date of Thursday; trash should be placed curbside by 7:00 a.m. City residents in Johnson County will have trash collected on Fridays and should have their refuse containers at the curb by 7:00 a.m. In a press release, L & K management stated they, “…appreciate being given the opportunity to provide (Spring Hill residents) with a variety of services and we look forward to a long and lasting relationship with the City of Spring Hill.” Deffenbaugh Industries, Spring Hill’s former trash collection service, cancelled their contract with the City of Spring Hill. The City needed to solicit requests for proposals of service. The City Council carefully considered the bids presented and chose L & K Services based on what they could offer residents. The price of trash collection has increased and will be reflected on resident’s November City services bill. Residential trash collection will be $16.11 a month. Senior Citizens will continue to receive a discount and their rate will be $12.32 a month. For clarification, the November 2008 bill will reflect the former Deffenbaugh rate for half of the month and the new rate for the second half of the month (the November bill will be mailed to customers on November 30, 2008). L & K will collect eight bags of household waste each week or three 30 gallon cans as well as six bags or bundles of yard waste. Brush and limbs should be bundled or tied and cut into 4-foot sections. L & K will not collect oil, car batteries, liquefied paint, gasoline, tires, steel pipe, rock or concrete. For ideas on recycling or disposing of these items, please visit www.springhillks.com. A monthly bulky item pickup service will be offered. Residents south of South / 215th Street will have bulky item pickup on the first Wednesday of every month. Residents north of South / 215th Street will have bulky item pickup on the fourth Wednesday of every month. Bulky item pickup does not include bags or boxes of regular trash, loose or scattered materials, construction debris, and liquid waste or hazardous materials. All items need to be placed curbside for pickup. Residents must contact L & K to arrange collection of appliances. Curbside recycling will continue to be offered to the residents of Spring Hill but service will be interrupted from November 1, 2008 to approximately December 1, 2008. L & K will provide each resident with an L & K 18-gallon recycling bin. Recyclables will be collected on the same day as regular trash pickup service. Items that will be included in this service are: #1 plastic bottles – Polyethylene Terephthatlate (PETE), aluminum food and beverage containers, steel food and beverage containers, #2 plastic and beverage containers, newspaper, office paper and magazines. This recycling service does not include glass or glass products. If glass is found in the recycling bin, it will be removed. For safety reasons, if broken glass is found in a recycling bin, it will not be emptied. During the transition from Deffenbaugh Services to L & K, residents should leave their Deffenbaugh recycling containers and polycarts at the curb for pickup on October 30th and October 31st. L & K has 96-gallon carts available for customer use. The carts provide an orderly way to contain trash. L & K reports that the carts are, “…virtually animal proof and are on wheels.” The carts are available for rent at $3.00 per month or for purchase at $110.00 (includes delivery). L & K will bill customers directly for this service; please call (913) 837-4637 for more information or to purchase a cart. L & K observes the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. If a holiday falls on a weekday, trash service will be delayed by one day during that week. L & K encourages residents to contact them at 888-837-4640 with any questions that may arise during the transition period.
APAC-Kansas has been awarded the construction contract for the 223rd Street Railroad Underpass Project. A pre-construction conference was held in December of 2008 with KDOT, Miami County, APAC-Kansas, Spring Hill representatives and other utility companies. APAC-Kansas intends to begin construction on this project in early February 2009, weather permitting. The contract with KDOT allows construction through Summer of 2010. The contractor, APAC-Kansas, will work with property owners to assure access to the property is maintained. KCP&L, Embarq and Suddenlink still have some very minor utility adjustments to finish in the next month; so, you may see their crews out in January finishing the work. Both 223rd Street and Woodland Road will be closed to all traffic within the project limits as soon as APAC-Kansas begins work. Once the railroad crossing is closed, it will not open again until the end of the project. Traffic will be routed to 207th Street in Spring Hill. The City intends to take measures to limit trucks on Hale and Nichols Streets. For a detour map for the City of Spring Hill and additional information about this project, please view the Miami County, Kansas Project Web site.
