Sesquicentennial Committee NewsSesqui-- what??? A sesquicentennial celebration marks the 150th anniversary of an event. In this case, it has been 150 years since Spring Hill was first founded. So in essence, plans are underway for a 150th Birthday Party! The sesquicentennial logo was selected to commemorate the first building constructed in Spring Hill, which was a hotel, built by founder James Hovey in 1857. The hotel was located on the highest point in town, near what is now the Spring Hill City Park. It was a two-story building that cost about $3,000 to construct and was built from lumber brought in from Leavenworth, KS. The sesquicentennial logo, which features this hotel, was designed by Spring Hill artist, Shawn Jones. Stage coaches, passing from Kansas City to Fort Scott, stopped frequently at the hotel for lodging and meals. According to some, the hotel was also used as a station on the underground railroad. However, with the introduction of the railroad and its placement through town, there was little to no business for the hotel due to its location and travelers needs. Therefore, two other hotels were built near the railroad tracks and the heart of the town moved.
